four Bulgarians Convicted for ATM Fraud in Uganda

Four Bulgarians accused of forging ATM cards have been convicted in Uganda.

However, the Buganda Road Court has further remanded the group that pends sentencing, saying it was to allow their lawyer to submit a mitigation request.

The court has found the four Bulgarians guilty of 33 cases of forgery but acquitted them of conspiracy to commit an offence and computer misuse, the Daily Monitor informs.

The convicts are believed to have forged 36 ATM cards and pin numbers in August with intent to defraud Stanbic Bank.

Anton Ivanov, Milen Katsarski, Adrian Dimitrov and Ivan Ganchev Emilov were arrested as they were withdrawing money from an automated teller machine (ATM) machine at Stanbic Bank in the capital suburb of Nateete.

The men were allegedly using a microchip and a phone battery to gain access to all the bank customers' accounts. Then they picked the accounts, holding huge sums, made ATM cards and withdrew the money. After changing them into dollars, the Bulgarians wired the money to bank accounts in their home country.

MUSEVENI, reaction towards foreign AID cuts.

Uganda: Museveni Bans Ministers' Trips As Aid Cuts Bite

The government has initiated some bold responses to the foreign aid cuts announced recently by a host of development partners.
The latest is the ban on foreign travel for cabinet ministers.
President Museveni said, Wednesday, that any foreign travel would have to be weighed in terms of its opportunity cost to government and would be sanctioned by the Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi.

Museveni, sources told us, announced the measures during a lengthy cabinet meeting at the Parliamentary building. He reportedly warned that much as the oil finds in the country portended a bright economic future, foreign aid cuts could affect the nation's march to progress.

"The President told us that there was need to operate within our means and show these Bazungu (donors) that we can do without them," said a minister, who attended the meeting.

According to our sources, the president proposed several measures to cope with what he called "surprising" aid cuts--including the ban on foreign travel, which he said consumes a lot of taxpayers' money.

The ban, however, doesn't come off much as a surprise. In October, when the president was inaugurating his latest batch of ministers, he preached against foreign travel, among other things.
Already, the Central Bank has come out to say that the suspension of aid, combined with other factors, will slow down Uganda's economic growth to 4.3% from the projected 5%.

An application called 'Winsenga' that performs ultrasounds on pregnant women and detects problems such as ectopic pregnancies or abnormal fetal heart beats has earned three students from Makerere University's College of Computing and Information Sciences a Microsoft award.

The three, Aaron Tushabe, Joshua Okello and Josiah Kavuma in their team known as Cipher256 won the Microsoft Imagine Cup Grant of $50,000 (about sh125m) and received the award during the Social Innovation Summit held on Dec. 4 in Silicon Valley, USA.

Among the applicants for this grant, 13 teams were initially selected as finalists having received the highest marks based on a combination of criteria: impact & viability, team quality & motivation, solution design & motivation and problem definition.

Apart from the cash prize, they will also receive software, cloud computing services, solution provider support, premium Microsoft BizSpark account benefits and access to local resources such as Microsoft Innovation Centers.

Microsoft will also connect grant recipients with its network of investors, NGO partners and business partners and will work with the grant recipients to tailor individual support as needed depending on the progress each team has made so far with its project.

Facebook might soon reach a decision to scrap Uganda off its list of countries following the country’s stance on homosexuals.

uganda blocked from facebook, uganda happening
Recently, Uganda has come under global scrutiny on its stand against Homosexuality with the Members of Parliament planning to pass the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that will have harsh penalties for the gay community.
This has prompted many donor countries to threaten cash and travel embargos on Uganda and its Anti-Homo forerunners if the bill is passed.
The issue of homosexuality in Uganda prompted the Ugandan Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to lash out at the Canadian Foreign Minister, Mr John Baird, at a recent summit in defence of Uganda’s stand on homos whom she accused of attacking Uganda’s human rights record in respect to sexual minorities.
Well, it seems the United States is not taking this lightly and as such gay rights activists in the U.S have pleaded with Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook founder) to make sure Uganda conforms to the set patterns of Facebook as an upholder of human rights.
To the activists, Uganda has violated many Facebook clauses and needs to be banned for some time. Zuckerberg has said that Facebook will be releasing an official statement soon as far as Uganda is concerned.

Muhumuza, sponsored by Aqua Sipi, had started off with a fighting style geared at getting a knock out.
Later, the boxers started trading punches and the round ended with each bleeding from a series of with cuts. The barrage of punches continued in the second round forcing the referee to stop the fight
